Honor Thy Father Movie stars John Lloyd Cruz as a husband and a father whose family has been involved in a Ponzi scheme in a corrupt religious group.
Produced by Reality Entertainment and directed by Erik Matti, this controversial and brave Pinoy indie drama film was screened at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival and won 12 major awards from various award-giving bodies in the Philippines and abroad.
Honor Thy Father Movie Plot Summary
In the movie, John Lloyd Cruz plays Edgar, the soft-spoken husband of Kaye (Meryll Soriano) and the father of their daughter Angel (Krystal Brimner).
The family is attending church services at the Pentecostal Church of Yeshua, and Kaye has been making millions of pesos by promoting her father’s investment scheme to her friends and fellow parishioners. Nevertheless, Edgar is somehow not convinced of her business.
And although some churchgoers doubt that it might be a scam, Kaye continued convincing more new recruits and that she believes that it was a blessing from God.
But one day, Kaye’s father was found dead and all the money disappeared. Shortly, the investors want their money back and even send death threats to them, until Angel was kidnapped. Now Edgar was left with no choice but to raise money and protect his family.

Honor Thy Father was disqualified from the Best Picture category of the 2015 Metro Manila Film Festival, which led to an investigation at Congress.
According to the MMFF Executive Committee, its producer Ronald “Dondon” Monteverde violated a rule when he did not disclose the movie’s participation in the Cinema One Originals Film Festival. But according to Monteverde, Honor Thy Father was not included in the original MMFF lineup and was only added when another film, Hermano Puli, withdrew in October.
Honor Thy Father lead actor John Lloyd Cruz shaved his head for his role. This is despite the fact that he might lose endorsement contracts, especially for shampoo. “My world has grown bigger. I am not just confined to my home network, ABS-CBN. I want to break away from my usual roles. I refuse to be typecast,” he reportedly said.
