Culion is a 2019 Filipino historical drama film released in 2019 that stars famous and award-winning actresses Iza Calzado, Jasmine Curtis-Smith, and Meryll Soriano.
The movie is directed by the ever-famous Alvin Yapan and produced by Mark Shandii Bacolod under iOptions Ventures Corp. The screenplay was led and written by Ricky Lee and the cinematography was made by Neil Daza, putting a very enticing throwback setup from the 1940s.
Culion Movie Plot
Culion focuses on three women, namely Ana (Iza Calzado), Doris (Jasmine Curtis-Smith), and Ditas (Meryll Soriano) who live in the life of stigma because they are plagued with leprosy. The setting is held in Culion, an island where people who live there, die there.
Culion is also called the “Island of No Return.” People who are afflicted with leprosies, such as Ana, Doris, and Ditas, are considered to be outcasts and are charged with a life sentence. Leprosy at that time has no cure, and those who are infected with the disease are not allowed to leave the place.
The three women have different hopes amidst their situations in life: Ana is a hopeful woman who never loses hope in finding a cure to the disease; Doris believes more in myth and a beautiful diwata will soon heal the island; and Ditas, who is trying to kill herself instead because of her helplessness of not being cured.
The three women decide to stand up and fight against the stigma between hope and despair on the island, redefining their role as a woman, a friend, a mother, and a human being.

The movie also stars main actors Joem Bascon, Mike Liwag, Suzette Ranillo, and with supporting casts Joel Saracho, Nicco Locco, Simon Ibarra, Mayen Estanero, VJ Mendoza, Mercedes Cabral, Mai Fanglayan, and a special guest appearance by John Lloyd Cruz.
