Kodigo Penal: The Valderrama Case is a 1980 Filipino action thriller produced by GP Films. It’s written and directed by Mike Relon Makiling (screenwriter of Patayin Mo Sa Sindak Si Barbara).
It stars ‘The Original Bad Boy’, Ace Vergel; ’80s sex goddess, Alma Moreno; with a special appearance by the ‘enfant terrible of Philippine cinema, Celso Ad. Castillo.
Although the names above are prominent in retrospect, very little of Kodigo Penal’s plot has trickled down into collective memory or even documentation for that matter.
The movie claims to be true-to-life although there’s little evidence of Capt. Valderrama case is archived news. What is known can be gleaned from cross-referencing scant sources with its official film poster.
Kodigo Penal: The Valderrama Case Movie Plot
Customs officer Capt. Nilo Valderrama (Vergel) is an honest man who values duty and family (Moreno) above all else. When he’s forced to uphold his duty and defend his family against a group of smugglers, he goes after them with guns blazing.
Joining him are Ramon Zamora and Rey Malonzo. By 1980, both actors have established careers playing Filipino versions of Bruce Lee. In the movie, Malonzo’s character must fulfill a mission that will likely break his friendship with Capt. Valderrama. Meanwhile, Zamora’s character is a ‘dragon’ who has gone against his code of honor and seeks to redeem himself ‘with death!’
In 2008, Makiling created a personal blog/online autobiography that may have been able to provide critical details about Kodigo Penal. Unfortunately, he stopped updating before he could write about his directorial experience. Makiling would go on to write 58 screenplays and direct 86 films until he succumbed to colon cancer in 2018.
