Based on the article “The Boy Who Wanted to Become Society,” by Quijano de Manila, Jaguar is a 1979 Filipino action film starring Philip Salvador, Menggie Cobarrubias, and Johnny Delgado.
The film was directed by influential Filipino director Lino Brocka, adopted into the big screen by Jose F. Lacaba and Ricardo Lee, and produced by Rolando S. Atienza. It was one of the entries in the 1980 Cannes Film Festival.
Jaguar Movie Plot
Philip Salvador plays Poldo Miranda, an ambitious security guard who longs to escape the poor life of Manila’s slums. Life opened a path to his dream after he saved troublesome but rich playboy Sonny Gaston, played by Cobarrubias, from a gang attack led by Direk, played by Delgado. As payback, Sonny took on Poldo as his personal bodyguard. Poldo the dreamer saw this act as a sign that he is finally on his way into high society.
However, life planned a different narrative for Poldo. While Sonny and Direk were able to settle their differences, peace did not last long. Sonny deceptively wooed Direk’s new girlfriend, Cristy, played by Amy Austria.
It was during a confrontation that turned Poldo’s life 360. He unintentionally fired and killed Direk. His dream of leaving his impoverished life finally crashed after Sonny asked him to be fully responsible for the killing of Direk.
